Access to Banking Review - a crucial opportunity at a critical time

I have called for a pause in all bank closures until a government review of banking services is complete.

I urged members of the community to make their voices heard in defence of island services as the Access to Banking Review opens for evidence this week.

The Labour Government’s Review came about after rural MPs highlighted a series of banking closures, including the proposed withdrawal of the Bank of Scotland in Benbecula.

The Review is examining the impact of changes in access to in-person banking services on consumers, communities and businesses, and it comes at a critical juncture for the people of Uist, who face the imminent closure of the Balivanich Bank of Scotland branch.

I recently met with community representatives to discuss concerns about the impact of the bank’s closure as part of a three-day programme of meetings across Uist and Barra, covering a wide range of issues from transport to health.

I said: “This is an important opportunity at a critical time. With the Balivanich branch of Bank of Scotland due to close next month, I urge all interested parties to return their views before the 20 July deadline.”

“The Government has been clear that it will act quickly where the evidence shows action is needed to protect access to banking services in the UK.”

“I will be urging the Bank of Scotland to hold on the proposed closure until the review is complete.”

“It is critical that island voices are heard. The quickest way to respond is to complete the online Smart Survey, but responses can also be sent by email to Accesstobankingservices@hmtreasury.gov.uk, or by writing to Access to Banking Services Review, Financial Services Group, 1st Floor, HM Treasury, 1 Horse Guards Road, London SW1A 2HQ.”
